My husband is dyslexic and wants to get his GED.?

He was diagnosed with dyslexia in jr. high, then went to high school in another part of the state and they put him in regular classes and he finally dropped out midway through his senior year (he had a teacher who told him to stop asking questions and sit in the back of the class and he’s pass him with a D!) . Now it would really help him (us) to get his GED, but he really didn’t learn much of anything in high school. He’s totally smart but has to work really hard at math, can’t spell, and can’t read out loud. I know he has the capacity to pass the test but am worried he’ll get too frustrated and quit. Are there any programs specifically for people like him? Any help is much appreciated.

See if there is a chapter of Literacy Volunteers in your area. Also, contact a local community college and ask if they have a program for learning disabled students. If so, talk to the people there. They may know of a program for your husband.

Most states offer accommodations for students with dyslexia. Contact your local GED Center or the Department of Instruction of the state you live in. You will most likely have to have a doctor or someone who is certified to diagnose dyslexia to complete and sign an accommodations form. I have successfully mentored 2 students with dyslexia get their GED. In both cases they received accommodations: extra time and scribe. Hope this helps.

the first answer was good. In addition, if it has only been about 3-4 years since your husband’s high school class graduated, he can go back to the district to find his old IEP folder with his tests and IEPs. Those documents can really help him get the assistance that he will need in school.

Good luck!
