If I tell a guy friend I’m getting married and he says When did that happen? What’s he trying to say?

He’s being a tad sarcastic. Did the engagement come about quickly? You might have surprised him with your announcement. “When did that happen?” is sort of the equivalent of “Wow. I had no idea you were even dating someone seriously.”

My first thought was that he hasn’t seen or talked to you in so long that he didn’t even know you were engaged or had a boyfriend or something like that. Just a thought. 🙂
