When writing an essay about anything a good place to start is understanding the subject you are writing about. Therefor You must understand what the poem is about; plan what you are going to write in ‘point form’. For example #1,-Introduction: Here you write a paragraph in precis form of the main ideas and tone of the poem.In the succeeding paragraphs you will expand on each sub-theme until you get to the last. Your closing paragraph may be a summation of the poem in which you can interject your thoughts of how the author dealt with the subject. You may agree or otherwise, giving reasons etc.

Since it is a poem you are dealing with you may want to examine style , diction ,imagery…

Poetry Essay Introduction

I would write a bit placing the poem into the context of when it was written and how it tackles the issues raised

then is it like the other poems and why/why not in relation to the context you already mentioned and write in about language techniques

then i would write more about the effectiveness of these and the mood of the poem and go back to the context – with quotations.

then write about the authors personal life if u can and generally see where u go.

ok what ur gonna want to do is start the intro off with what the poem was about. if eveyone did an essay about the same poem then do ur intro on what the essay meant to u. within the intro mention 3 main topics that resurface throughout the poem. those three topics will become the main ideas for ur next three paragraphs. so make sure they are in depth and deep ideas so that u can elaborate on them. then in the conclusion sum up the 3 ideas and what u feel the poem expresssed without bringing any new ideas into the essay. i did a poem essay last semester in English Lit. class and got an “A” on it so i hope this helps u to sail through your essay!

Well your introduction should have a catchy opening sentence, provide information such as the poet’s name and the name of the poem you are analysing. The last few sentences of the introduction should contain a thesis statement: that is, an argument or point of view you are trying to convey. In total, your intro. doesn’t have to be long—perhaps 5-6 sentences in total.

You could introduce the poem’s author and say a little about him/her and whether this is poem is typical or significantly different from others written.

You could mention the style it is written in and later in the essay whether this style suits the subject.

Could also say why you think it is a subject lending itself to the poetic form or otherwise.

Lots of choices…..but I would keep the intro short.

start your essay with the general theme of the poem. like, if it is william wordsworth’s “daffodils” you can write:

This poem,”daffodils”, is by william wordsworth and it tells us about the poet’s keen observation. It also tells us how the poet recollects the sight of the daffodils to lighten his mood.
