In my school district, the pay scale is the same for all teachers regardless of what they teach. Those who have more advance degrees obviously make more money than those without advance degrees. But a regular education teacher with an advance degree earns the same money as a special education teacher with an advance degree.

In our district, and most districts, teachers are paid for their years of service and how much education they have. I have been a special ed teacher, a librarian and a second grade teacher. Even though I have changed jobs, they didn’t take money away from me. I do get a raise in pay each year because I have another year of service. Also, when I got my second masters, they paid me more money. My mother is still under the impression that I would make more money as a high school teacher. I can’t get her to understand.

Depends where you teach. In most school districts they do not make more money they are on the same salary schedule because of union issues. Some districts provide extra stipends to special education teachers because of all the after school meetings, IEPs, paperwork etc. or they let you fill out a time card for your extra time and some do not. My experience has been in most situations they do not make more and are on the same salary schedule as general education teachers.

It all depends on what your specialization is and where you want to teach. You should always ask schools how much ABOVE base pay do they pay whether you are a general teacher or a special education teacher.

In some school districts, they do. Mine does not pay sped teachers any more than other teachers. Most districts do pay more for those who have a masters degree or PhD. In my district a Master’s degree gets you $2000 more each year than the base pay.

In my district, the special ed teachers make, on average, approximately $8,000 per year more than a similarly trained and experienced “regular” ed teacher.

Hope this helps.
