Can a child be dyslexic in math and not in any other subjects? This child seems to read and right fine.?

The child does wear glasses. She has low self-esteem and no confidence. However, she reads and writes without any problems. Doesn’t dyslexia usually affect reading?

Hi!

It’s not called dyslexia when it’s about math. When it’s about math it’s called dyscalulia…

First let them pick the book. Dyslexics often get “baby” books because they do not read as fast. Bad idea they are smart and get board of these books. Find out if bright lights make reading harder. Most of the time it does and causes head aches. Find the book they like on line. You can change the screen colore. This is a great help some like pink back ground some yellow or blue. That makes a big difference. Use a blank pice of paper to go under or over the line they are on. Teach phonix sounding out words. Also have them make sense of the words. Like they may see “As I stepped out in to the right sunlight from the barkness ov the movie house” now you know barkness and right is wrong make sure they do. This will help when they read they can know their mind is goofing off again. Do not under estimate graphic Novels. Little captions of words lots of pictures to help show what the words should meen and exiting.

“Dyslexic” is a technical term meaning “disfunctional in reading,” specifically. The fact that a person isn’t dyslexic does not preclude another neurological deficit. A psychologist could give you the technical term for a learning disability in mathematics, and if a diagnosis is confirmed, your child’s school will provide support.

There is a downside to such a diagnosis. It will stick with the child for a long time, and if her problem is develomental–she just hasn’t matured as rapidly as her peers–you may prefer her to catch up without the label.

A diagnosis is important. Ask for one. But don’t push for a finding of a neurological problem to get special treatment only to find her labeled by her classmates as “a retard” or something equally ill-informed.

If the problem is developmental, treat it that way. Back up to the last point where she was making progress and proceed slowly, but with “all deliberate speed” from there.

Not being able to read is much more of a handicap than a math deficiency. My best wishes for you and for her.

It’s not called dyslexia when it’s about math. When it’s about math it’s called dyscalulia and when it’s about writing it’s called dysgraphia. The child should be evaluated by a competent nuero-psychologist who specializes in testing children for learning disabilities. That would be able to tell you if the child has a learning disability and any other issues that they might have. When my daughter was evaluated we found out that she had four learning disabilities including her dyslexia. Once you know for sure what’s going on you can go from there.

DYSCALCULIA is the equivalent of dyslexia but is muddling of numbers. My son has dyslexia but is fine with maths. There are symptoms which overlap.

I suggest you search for dyscalculia on google and research it to decide if it is worth investigating for your child.

Good luck and best wishes.

There is diagnosis that a student just can’t do math. It just doesn’t click or that they see different than what is in front of them. I read a book called My Thirteenth Winter by Samantha Abeel. and a it is an autobiography of a student getting diagnosed with that problem.
