How do i write an equation for this?

Let X represent ne # in the sequence.
X^2 + (X+1)^2
This is a bit of a long shot but,
X^2 = -(x+1)^2
-X^2= (x+1)^2
-X= square root of (x+1)^2
-X= X+1
