Would you use quotation marks when questioning something?

For example..

If a paper said… Zebras are rhinos.

And you decided to write a paper that questioned that like.. Zebras are rhinos? Impossible!

Would you use qoutations marks for the zebras are rhinos part?

I think that the only time you should use quotation marks is when you are citing a direct quote that someone else either wrote or said. For example:

Dr. Doolittle said, “Zebras are rhinos? Impossible!”

The quotation marks indicate that those are the exact words that were stated. The link below will tell you everything you need to know about quotation marks. It does talk about when to use them with words, but not is the example you have use above.

I would actually, in this case, because you are using the exact words from the paper to emphasize your disagreement. If you said something like ‘I really don’t think zebras are rhinos’ then you would not need them. It does depend a little on the nature of the paper, but I’m assuming it’s quite official with a cited author. If it’s just your friend Joe Shmo’s paper, and he doesn’t care, then you could probably get away with not using them.
