my mother is a preschool teacher so when i have to do volunteer work i see a lot of parents say to their kids, “mommy/daddy loves you, have fun today and i’ll see you when school is done.” i think that its reassuring that the parents tell them that they’re coming back for them at the end of the day. since most preschoolers can’t read a lot of words or know a lot of words telling them is just as comforting.

They need to know three things:

1. You love him (her).

2. The people at the school love him (her).

3. You will be back “when the little hand points to 12” or “after your nap” or whatever event the child can comprehend. Do NOT be late. Preschoolers are used to and accept injustice, but they do not understand excuses. If you are late, apologize, but spnd your time loving, not explaining.
