When did Brendan Behan say ‘the first item on the agenda is a split’?

I have Googled this and got 75 results – every one of them says “Brendan Behan once said that the first item on the agenda of any Republican organisation/Nationalist organisation/political party is a split.” But which did he actually say, where did he say it and when? If you can cite a source – on-line or off-line – it would be great.

If you really want to pursue this and are willing to chase around, I would suggest going to the website of the University College of Dublin.

You might try the library website. Here’s one library address:

Perhaps you can find the email address of a faculty member. There is a faculty directory. Look for an academic who might include Behan in their curriculum, and there should be tons. Queery them with your question.

You might even email the president, Dr. Hugh Brady. His address:

[email protected]

Briefly tell him what you want and ask if he could direct your question to a member of the faculty who might know.

I have no doubt that there are many faculty and students who would LOVE to answer your question.
