What is the theme of the poem “calamity” by F.R.Scott?

I need some help with getting to the theme of

a poem called “calamity” by F.R. Scott, as well as some of the

literary devices used to relate to the theme.

-Calamity-

A laundry truck

Rolled down the hill

And crashed into my maple tree.

It was a truly North American calamity.

Three cans of beer fell out

(Which in itself was revealing)

And a jumble of skirts and shirts spilled onto the ploughed grass.

Dogs barked, and the children

Sprouted like dandelions on my lawn.

Normally we do not speak to one another on this avenue,

But the excitement made us suddenly neighbours.

People exchanged remarks

Who had never been introduced

And for a while we were quite human.

Then the policeman came-

Sedately, for this was Westmount-

And carefully took down all names and numbers.

The towing truck soon followed,

Order was restored.

The starch came raining down.

I would say that a possible theme is about neighbors coming together. I teach my students that theme can usually be stated in a single sentence and teaches some insight about human nature. So, I would say “Crisis brings people together.”

Hope that helps!

There is no word known as snuggly. For I have seen the soiled stains when fumbling with his flies……………..What does that mean? Now that I have beaten you up,this piece of poetry is the best that I have read since today. The first para was excellent.I like the metaphor in which you have compared drink to a dagger.Perhaps you should have added more figures of speech. The poetry proves that humanity is still alive. There is someone in the west who knows that drinking is inauspicious and a terrible act. The last para was very heart touching. It proves that even a calm and descent man can turn into a monster upon alcohol consumption.Very inspiring piece, keep it up.
