What is the origin of the saying “Riddle me this”?

I can only remember it from the Batman movie. Was it a saying before that? If so, who said it first? Thanks!

Are you talking about the original 1960’s pilot movie then that is as far back as I know, Frank Gorshun said it first it was his catch phrase as “The Riddeler”

Sorry, but in popular culture, “Riddle me this” appeared much earlier than Batman or Frank Gorshin as The Riddler: In a 1938 movie, “Spring Madness.” Burgess Meredith s character (Lippincott) says it to Lew Ayres character (Thatcher).

This was a regular phrase used by Batman bad guy The Riddler. Obviously your co-worker has watched one too many reruns on Nick At Night. If you had known this was from a TV show, you could have catagorized it there, but I think this is a good place for your query.
