“I had borne as best I could”

Well, what did he bear? Was it, perhaps, his friend’s actions toward him? The supposed insult?

“when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge”

What do you think this means?

“I had borne as I best could”

Put up with him/her or his/her actions as best I could

“but when he ventured upon insult”

S/he insulted me. Could be verbal or physical.

“i howed revenge”

I sought retribution. I gave up and did something back at them.
