What does this sentence mean?
I was looking up something about the East Indian family structure and it said:
“Divorce is prohibited and visiting unions are negatively
sanctioned and are relatively rare.”
I understand about the divorce but what is visiting unions, etc?

A “visiting union” is a relationship in which the man and woman are not married have a child or children and do not live together. And I’m assuming they were never married.
And negatively sanctioned means…. not given approval

A “visiting union” is when a man visits a woman at the parent’s home and the man and woman are involved in some kind of romance or courtship. It covers everything from dinner to sleeping over. It sometimes refers to when a man and a woman live together with the woman’s family, usually for a short time, but are not legally married.

It sounds to me like they are referring to dating. Perhaps arranged marriages are the norm there.
