Awareness of weakness is what motivates a society to succeed. It also causes a subconscious defense mechanism to activate. In other words, we feel that we are the strongest country in the world and the world sees us that way, however, our civilization as we know it could be quickly dismantled to a 3rd world level in a matter of days. We saw evidence of this in New Orleans after Katrina. So, in order to reassure ourselves as a nation and THE super-power, we strive to keep everyone else at bay and no more of a threat to becoming an equal than the already are.
