What does this English passage mean?

“The subject of the poem Odyssey (to use Maynard Mack’s categories) is ‘life-as-spectacle’, for readers, diverted by its various incidents, observe its hero Odysseus primarily from without.”

What does it mean to say “from without”?

The readers get no internal conflict – only the problems that face him without.

When reading the poem, it is merely the events that occur AROUND Odysseus – not INSIDE him.

Think “The Last Temptation of Christ” versus “The Passion of The Christ”.

that the reader was not with, or had not the opportunity to be present at the time of the various incidents, they see them through the narrative from outside of the circle of actual events. In opes that you will have a sense of what it was like to be there by the writers descriptions of the events in the Odysseus poem

From a third person’s perspective. We view Odysseus through the eyes of no one in the story.

I think it means that you observe him as an action-figure without learning anything about his character, thoughts or feelings.
