It means that we are all one. We are not isolated from one another, we are all connected. So when one person dies, we all lose a little. The bell he’s talking about is a church bell tolling for a funeral. Never ask for whom the bell tolls, he’s saying because no matter who it is that died, the bell is tolling for YOU.

I don’t know about John Donne, but Ernest Hemingway wrote a novel called, “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”
Knowitall answered it well.
The tolling of a funeral bell is quite mournful. When someone hears it they say, “Who died?” The mournful tolling hits you in the gut and reminds you that one day it will toll for you.
