If you think outside the box, you think in an imaginative and creative way.

The origin is from a puzzle consisting of 9 dots, arranged in a 3 x 3 grid.
The challenge is to connect all the dots using only 4 straight lines, without lifting the pencil from the paper.
Most people upon first encountering this cannot do it, because they THINK they have to stay within the boundaries of the nine dots. To solve it, the lines must extend beyond them, or “outside the box”.
As “think outside the box” is generally used, the “box” means “artificial and self-imposed limitations”.
