skeletons in the closet….definition?

All along, I have always understand this phrase as keeping secrets that you do not want people to know but recently, my friend said that it could only be used for family secrets…

is that true?

by the way, can it be considered as a proverb?

No it’s not a proverb. The “ownership” of closet is probably why lots of people think it’s only family secrets.

Mainly used to say there is something that was decided shouldn’t be known by everyone.

An example was the actor Rock Hudson being gay. That was hidden from his fans and public until no one could hide he was dying of AIDS – his “skeleton in the closet” was made public.

A shameful secret, as in ‘Both her parents were alcoholics; that was the skeleton in her closet.’ This metaphoric term alludes to a murder victim long concealed in a closet, possibly based on some true incident that is now forgotten. It is not only used for family secrets, it can also be used by a group of people with a similar dark secret that they do not want known publicly.

And it wouldn’t be a very good proverb. There would be no real full context denoting a life lesson.

SKelteons in the closet is a nod to people hiding dead bodies in the closet. As such, it applys to any secrets that would damage a person’s credibility, or land them in legal trouble. So yes, it can apply to family secrets.

Skeletons in the closet……….

implies that you have murdered people and hid them in your closet.

It means a bad thing has been done and you have concealed it.

And no………..it is not restricted to family secrets.

Politicians who run for office are frequently found to have ‘skeletons in the closet’. Past marital affairs, drug use, participation in anti-patriotic demonstrations, avoiding the draft, ………………many things.

It means a juicy piece of bad stuff you did that you have managed to keep secret for a long long time.

I don’t think it has to be family secrets… I think it can be individal secrets too.

No, it’s not a proverb. A proverb is a story that teaches a lesson. It’s a saying.

It’s not just referring to family secrets. It’s more general than that. And it’s not a proverb, just a saying.

It is about any secret and is not a proverb just like ‘chip off the old block’ or chip on your shoulder’ are not proverbs.
