It means you should have a huge, lofty goal and work toward it. Even if you don’t meet that goal, you’ll still be farther ahead than you were in the beginning.
Example: John wants to go to school to be a rich neurosurgeon. He goes to college, studies hard, and obtains his biology degree. He applies to med schools, but isn’t accepted. He’s not going to be a doctor, but he still has a biology degree and can find a job he’d be interested in.
