Is anyone else sick of the Wikipedia Scholars on Y/A?

I have noticed that a large number of uneducated people (post high school) believe Wikipedia is their gateway to knowledge. I have personally found many discrepancies with this resource; it was also the policy of my college not to use this unreliable and often subjective source of information. It just seems that stupid answers are usually accompanied by a link to Wikipedia which leads me to infer that most of the country’s morons have found their workaround a formal education.

Yes. The assumption that I read when someone posts a wikipedia based answer is that only they know how to get information from that source, and that we, somehow, are computer illiterate. The assumption that folks who ask questions here don’t have the skill to use wikipedia, or citizendium, says a lot about those folks who make those assumptions and post wikipedia based answers.

Yes, wikipedia is generally a good source, about on the level of an adequate encyclopedia, which are also not valued on campus. A good place to start, but not a sole source of information, and definately not a preferred providor.

There probably are discrepancies in Wikipedia. But, the same is true of even the best references. I use it because it is linked to other sources, most of which are considered authorative, including Encyclopedia Britannica and dictionary.com. It is quite unfair to Wikipedia to discount it as a useful source, especially since it is easily accessible and user-friendly. Of course, for University and College purposes it is necessary to doublecheck all references, no matter what they are.

To accuse and insult those who use it as a source is high-handed, to say the least.

You have to know how to use it. Go ahead and fix those discrepancies if you really care, though I assume you’ve got some vested interest that is opposed to Wiki.
