The carpet itself acts like the spring in the scale and effectively adds another spring in series with the one in the scale.

This changes the effective force constant and reduces the proportion of your weight on the scales spring.

You need a flat hard surface like the hardwood floor to get an accurate reading. The carpet will not hold the scale firmly in place therefore causing an inaccurate weight.

The carpet acts as a sponge which absorbs some of the weight you are applying, therefore causing an inaccurate reading.

Ask yourself. If you fall over, would you rather fall onto a carpeted floor or a hardwood floor??

The carpet puches back on the scale wich throws off the weight .
