say “Very well, thank you. And you?”

or “Not too well, but thank you for asking. And yourself?”

Never go in to detail about your ailments. People really don’t MEAN it when they ask how you’re doing. It’s just the polite thing to say!

when somebody’s just trying to say hello or wondering how you are doing with some certain thing, just reply with “i’m fine” or “i’m doing great”..something like that..trust me, it’s not as hard as you think..

it also depends on what the person is referring to..if he’s referring to a certain point that you seem to know, then answer what you have to answer!!

It depends who asked and in which country…..

If it’s in the US, than the answer “fine” is more than sufficient.

If you are in Europe, you can answer with what you want to say.

The second part of the question:

If the person asks you the question and looks into your eyes and wait’s for an answer… than it’s like “Europe”, reply honestly what you want to tell him.

If the person asks you the question and walks further…. than you know…. “Fine, thanks”

This is one of those “throw-away” conversation starters or greeting phrases that doesn’t actually mean “tell me every last little detail about everything that is going on in your life”. The best response is an equally trite throw-away phrase like “Fine, thanks” or “Not bad”.

How do you do? is quite formal,

the proper response would be

Very well, Thank you

even if you’re not

or

Very well, and you?

it also depends who this person is! if it is just an acquaintance, a “i’m fine, thanks for asking, how about you?” would do. but if it is your really close pal, im sure the question is more about how has your life been.

err?

you can say “fine” or “good enough” but if you don’t like the person who asks you can answer “i was much more better before meeting you”! i did it once!!!! LOL!!!
