Can you help me with the meaning of this quote?

“You may go into the field or down the lane, but don’t go into Mr. McGrgor’s garden: your father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregors.” Beatrix Potter “The Tale of Peter Rabbit

I haven’t read Peter Rabbit since I was a small child, but I suspect it means that Peter’s dad, a rabbit, was either shot, or caught in a snare, and then butchered and put into a “pot pie” by the McGregor’s.

Are you looking for something a little deeper than that?

You really means that the mother wants him to stay out of the garden because it is dangerous.
