Can someone please explain this quote to me from Macbeth? Act 3?
And put a barren sceptre in my gripe,
Thence to be wrench’d with an unlineal hand,
No son of mine succeeding.”
DOES ANYBODY UNDERSTAND THIS QUOTE?!!

Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown. (He has been handed the roll of King but can’t do anything with it)
And put a barren scepter in my grip (a scepter denotes power, his power is barren).
The “unlineal and hand” and “no son of mine succeeding” speaks to the fact that he has no kid to take over when he dies. Basically he is belly-aching about being powerless and will likely not have an effective or remembered king-ship.
When you read Shakespear, say the words, it is meant to be spoken with Drama…such a crime to just read MacBeth, you need to feel the King’s desperation…stupid schools alway getting people to read plays, go see it or rent the DVD!
