well.,. can someone tell me what this quote means?

“what gets us into trouble is not what we don’t know. it’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so”…

funny but i really don’t get it.,. call me stupid but i need help,., it’s been bugging me out since i heard it in our literature class,.,.

I believe Mr. Twain is stating that it is a lack of humility that gets us into trouble. When we think we know something for sure, so sure that we are unwilling to listen or check our own facts then we tend to act on incorrect information. We do it entirely too often in fact. Pride is a nasty thing. Twain felt man was very prideful in believing that we could control the advances of technology. He knew human nature to be very dark and was very mistrustful of mankind in general.

I believe that Mr. Twain is commenting on our (human’s) uncanny ability to justify, regardless of facts, what we believe to be true.
