I’m not sure about starting with a qoute in a RESEARCH paper however it is an extraordinary way to begin an essay (such as the ones you have to write in seventh and tenth grade). Quotes are an excellent way to show that you know what you are talking about, that you are actually interested in the subject.

IMPORTANT : Make sure you explain the qoute that you put down. Don’t simply write it down because it “sounds good”. Tell the reader a little bit about the qoute – who said/wrote it, where it originated from, the meaning of it.

yes. I even had several professors when I was last in school 10 years ago who felt that a good research paper should begin with a quote. it’s a way of anchoring your paper, starting from a knowable location, commanding respectability, and it shows your reader early on that you are doing a research paper, not an opinion piece. aesthetically, I think it is a very nice way to begin a paper.

Quotes are great way to catch the readers attention. For example if you are doing a research paper on the impact of Thomas Jefferson…you could began the paper with his quote “We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” You then would write the paper explaining why Thomas Jefferson had such an impact on America. You could tie your thesis statement right in with the quote.

That has a really positive effect on the reader’s mind, particularly if the quote is catchy.

I’m talking here based on personal experience… try to use a quote of some philosopher of medival times, it can be very impressive.

I don’t need to tell you that the quote must be relevant to the subject.

I guess you can it depends on the subject. If your researching an invention then you could use a quote from the inventor.

Yes, but this is something that can often come across as trite. If you’re an inexperienced enough writer that you have to ask, then you probably shouldn’t do it.
