A question about an english paper?

I have to summarize an article that is two pages in length. I have 9 quotes and was wondering whether that is over-doing it. No quotes are over 7 words, and a few quotes are just phrases.

Which is two pages long: the article or your summary? Summaries are not usually two pages in length. As for using nine quotes in a short paper, as a general rule that’s too many quotes. Having said this, in your case you’ve indicated that some of the quoted material is short in length; it might be permissible then. It is important to be selective in your choice of quotes and discuss them, especially the lengthier ones. Don’t just string along a series of quotes. It takes away from the validity of your paper. Anybody can use quotes, but do they really understand and know how to use them in order to communicate their ideas effectively to the reader? The reader, in this case your teacher, wants to see if you’ve understood the artilce and can write about it.

Show how the quotes you’ve selected relate to your summary, by expanding on them. Quotes are usually used to either elaborate ideas or support them. Also, a quote should not be alone in a sentence all by itself. In other words, try not to just insert a quote and put a period at the end. This is incorrect. Either introduce it (e.g. According to the article ” “.), begin the sentence with the quote or insert in the middle of the sentence. I hope this helps. Take care and good luck.

When I write papers the maximum my teachers like is four. I think because they’re short you might be able to get away with like 5 or 6 but 9 is kind of pushing it.
