We homeschool year round and my daughter loves it! We go for roughly 3 months then have 2-3 weeks off. I know someone in Beaufort,SC where they public school on a year round schedule and so we just follow that schedule. My son goes to public school so she thinks it’s fun when she’s off and he’s not…but turn around is fair play because he gets to tease her too!

Well, this is the homeschooling section, and homes are homes year-round, so…

But for public schools, we have a few here where I live. They take breaks more often than other schools do (despite people thinking you NEVER get a break) or longer breaks, like 3 weeks at Christmas instead of just 2 like everybody else. I’ve heard positive things about them: the kids don’t get so burned out, the teachers don’t get so burned out, learning does seem to be better. Parents are usually the ones to complain because most parents work and don’t get 3 weeks off for Christmas and 2 weeks here and 2 weeks there and finding childcare can be very difficult. Seems to me that elementary schools that offer such a program should make sure to have reasonable childcare available for those weeks.

I don’t think I’ve heard of any jr. high or high schools here doing year-round.

Since this is the homeschooling section, I doubt many will “go to a year round school”. We school year-round simply because I’ve seen how much students “forget” over the long summer break. The few textbooks we use generally re-cover several weeks worth of lessons when moving up to the next book.

Our schedule is to have 4 weeks of school and one week off. This way, we still get the 10 weeks of vacation that public schools have.

I like not having to plan for months worth of activities, and, if something isn’t working, it gives us more chances to change things up.

We homeschool year-round, this is by my son’s choice – he just plain loves learning and gets bored if we take off for significant amounts of time. We go through the summer (he takes off for camps, baseball tournament, etc.) and take off a month in the winter for the holidays. He likes this a lot more – he doesn’t have to go through all the review that would be necessary from taking 2-3 months off, he gets to take his own pace with things because he’s not rushed, and he’s not bored when the kid across the street sleeps till noon or goes on vacation πŸ™‚

This also allows us to take mini-vacations whenever we need it – because we go well over the 180 days per year, we can take a day here and there whenever necessary.

I just began homeschooling my son in November 2006. I have decided to homeschool year round as I know it is important that he retain what he has learned. However, I take a week off here and there and don’t school for as many hours a day in the summer. There is plenty of time for summer fun, sports, etc.

To the people who say/think that you don’t get breaks in year-round school, you couldn’t be more wrong. Year-round schools usually have two to three week breaks every other month, or so.

I think it’s a good idea, because that way, students retain more of what they learn(ed).

We simply go year round because we like to take time off when it fits in our schedule, or when we need it.

Home – unschooling is not tied to a conventional school schedule, and since we do not follow a traditional fixed schedule or curriculum, learning happens every day in one way or another.

Home – unschooling is a way of life for us, and life happens 365 day’s a year 24/7.

Hmmm… We homeschool, so how can we help but go to our “school” year round, rent a vacation home?

Its also pretty hard to stop kids from learning new things, you would have to blindfold them, put ear plugs in, and they would still learn something-what it is like to be deaf and blind.

my thoughts on this is that people need time to relax and if school is year round how can people do that !
