Why do you think foreign languages should be taught at a young age? Why not?
Please tell me how you feel about languages being taught in elementary schools.

When babies are learning to speak they all babble. Babies from many different nationalities all make the same noises. They learn what is recognizable as language to their parents by the reaction of their parents to the noises they are making. If a baby is born into a bi-lingual home he receives positive reaction to two different languages and easily becomes bilingual.
As we get older we become more conditioned to what seems comfortable or natural to us. It is harder to open our mind up to learning a new way of communicating.
So in answer, yes languages should be learned at an early age to be most effective.

i think that if children start learning foreign languages at a younger age they will be almost fluent by the time they are in high school. if they are constantly around people who speak french, for example, they will eventually learn some french. languages are helpful for jobs, and learning at a younger age provides a wider variety of subject choices for high school (eg, if you are fluent in french by high school, you can take a second language instead of taking french, so you learn more than one language)
i sure wish i had taken french when i was younger!

It seems to stick with the smaller kids better. I know very basic Spanish somehow because I remembered it from elementary school, which I think is the reason why they try and do it.

without a doubt — the united states is currently suffering economically by not being able to be a good global player. in most private schools it isn’t even an issue. most of the kids i know start learning spanish at their day care. public schools need to catch up.

Yes. they are part of the curriculum in high school and college, the younger you start the easier it is to learn them, just like playing the piano.
