Why can’t I friggen learn math?!?

I am a college student that just can’t seem to pick up on math (algebra in particular). I get mostly straight A’s in all my other classes, so it’s not like I am not trying because I really am. I avoid all math classes as much as possible because I hate the subject so much, however since graduation is nearby I am forced to take the developmental class as required to graduate. It’s basic algebra and no matter how long I stare at this stuff or try to understand it I goes through one ear and out the other. I have spent money on tutors and such and it’s seemingly hopeless. I always had problems with math ever since high school barly passing classes. I am not sure what the problem is, the stuff is like a second language to me…Anyone have any suggestions??

I am very sorry you are having such a hard time. I do not have an answer for you only some suggestions that worked for me. I would like to share with you my experience. I have a pretty high IQ, but my math teachers would have never believed it. I was always looking for the reason why when it came to math. I was always looking for the logic in it but no one was able to give it to me. I had the hardest time in alg.

what i did.- the language was way over my head. I was in class and knew i was not going to be able to pass. My GPA was very high and i did not want it to go down. I was not going to let the alg. thing beat me. I decided to have a one on one with my professor. She suggested that I drop the class but continue to come to class, do the assignments to best of my ability, BUT to re-take it next semester. She thought that my problem could be the language! Alg. language can be difficult if you do not understand the basic math vocabulary and I didn’t. Too look back now( as an educator) I now know I never got a good math education in elementary school and it followed me all the way to the university. I struggled in all my math classes. SO…. I dropped the class continued to go to class and do the homework. I took the test but of course it wasn’t counted. I became more familiar with the ALG. language and the next semester I re-took the class and passed it with a high B. I also researched professors. I ask other students about their math professors or teachers. I ask them why or why not they liked or disliked them. I also took notes. When I thought I found the professor that was for me, I begged to get into his class even though by the time I was able to register his class was already filled. I went to him and told him why I wanted in his class so he allowed me in.After I passed ALG 1 the other math classes I had to take were not as hard because I had my basic ALG down.

Please do not get discouraged. Please do not allow someone to tell you … you cannot pass because you are not smart enough. I sometimes thought that about myself when I have an IQ of 140 !!

Good Luck.

I recently went to a course where we learnt all about studying. The guy who was running it said some people put bad experiences to the subject. This causes them to have a block on the subject. For example, something bad might have happened to you while you were studying algebra. You could try listening to your favourite music while studying maths or have something that means alot to you near you.

Some people just really aren’t good in math like some aren’t good in English. It just depends on how your brain works, I would just try different ways to study the material.
