When is the best time to have kids complete homework? Right after school of before bedtime?

My two school agers are in late elementary school and early middle school.

I’m a rising eighth grader, and I always found it comfortable to do take a two-hour break right after-school before preparing to complete my assignments. However, I’ve always been one who liked setting assignments off till the last minute. I believe that any time would be good, as long as the complete it while doing it well, however, making them do it right after school will teach them good habits about not procrastinating.

Of course there are always a few drawbacks with both times.. For instance, if they complete their assignments right after school, they may have rushed through all because they were in a hurry to have some free time. However, doing homework late means that they may either have become tired from doing any activities, or they may not even be able to finish if they wait too late…

I suppose it depends on your child’s preferences, when they’re able to concentrate, and when they just seem more alert and willing to do stuff.

There is a better chance for the kid to do his homework right after he/she comes from school. They are still active and their minds are still running.

Normally, they would just find other things to do if they were supose to do it before bedtime.

Sidenote: if the homework takes them longer to complete this will decrease their sleeping time and they might get it completed but too tired to understand it fully.

Honestly the best time to study is right after school because u can get it out of the way and ur free to do whatever u want to. Am not saying that rush through it am saying just do it first. Well hope this helps! Good luck!

well i know when i get home i go online for 30-60 minutes then i start my homework, eat dinner, and finish whatever homework is left after dinner. I mostly never have homework so most of the time i just do my homework at school during study hall.

It depends on when your kids are the most alert – I structure my son’s homeschool day around his alert times, and let him have a break during his “down” times. He tends to have one last spurt of focused energy around 8:30-9:30 at night, so I reserve some advanced read-aloud and final wrap up to his day at that time. However, at 4:15-4:30, for some reason his brain just completely shuts down, so that’s when he has free time.

Each kid is different, but if you let them study according to when they are the most alert, you’ll see a huge gain in retention and grades 🙂

i used to do them when i came home from school but sometimes i am tired and i do them before bedtime. it really depends on how i am felling but i think the best time for homework is when i get home. after that i watch tv or read in the 2 hours left before bedtime. but as i said before it really depends on how i fell that day.

Well I’m a kid and I say that you should let your kids come home and relax for about 30 minutes then they should do their homework.

Sometimes school is so stressful it’s good to let kids unwind first. I would say, let them choose when they can do it. Just don’t let it be too late or they might not be able to finish it.

Depends on the child. My daughter likes to do it first thing, my son needs to unwind first. I do not let him wait late, because I want him to relax before bed.
