When are school officials required to report a 5yr old missing from their campus?

My 5yr old son walked off campus about a block to his daycare. The School did not call the police. He was missing for at leat 10 min. Are there rules or policies about this?

There are rules about this but they very from state to state. Usually the time line is very vague. It will say that the school is to notify the police when they are sure the child is no longer on campus. That means that they have time to conduct an extensive search of the campus before they are required to notify the police.

1st of all, I’m glad your son is ok. 2nd, I feel your frustration. I was picking up my kids a couple of weeks ago & discovered everyone was searching for a missing 8 year old. It was his 1st yr. at this school & school had just started app. 2 weeks prior. Anything could’ve happened to him! I’d say app 15 mins. passed when they discovered he had walked home even though his mom had told him it wasn’t allowed. I waited there to see the turnout. The cops never showed, I doubt they called them. Can you imagine? Any predator could’ve taken him knowing there’s a lot of confusion at the beginning of school. His teacher was pale as a ghost with fright. In the end, we all breathed a sigh of relief.

If there are no rules there should certainly be some.

Ten minutes seems to be a shot period of time. It is not when a small child is missing. It literally can be a lifetime. The police should have been called immediately.

Hmmm…I hear a “switch schools” in the breeze. Do they realize what could happen to a child in ten minutes?
