What is the origin of class distinction in high school (ex. freshmen,sophomores, juniors,seniors)?

Where did those phrases come from? And why are they called that? Who coined them?

In my own opinion, I would guess that “senior” came to be that because it also means older, and seniors in school are (generally) the oldest students in the school. “Junior” means 2nd, and they are the 2nd oldest. “Freshman”.. well, fresh- to the school? I have no idea. And sophomore just has me stumped!
