What info should I include in a daily folder for first graders and their parents?

I have been teaching for seven years. This will be my first year teaching first grade. In order to make communication and learning a family and school affair, I have decided to make a mini reference/ homework/ communication folder. I know that I will be including a spelling contract and behavior notice for the week. I would also like to include a variety of skills that will remain in the folder that I want to encourage the parents to go over daily or at least 2-3 times a week to help with repetition. Things such as counting by 2,3,5, colors and color words, days of week, months of year, days in a week, sight word lists, blah blah blah.

Could I get a good list of things to include?? I would love to hear ideas from any teachers. I hope that providing this info will help them stay involved and dedicated to the education of their child.

PLEASE HELP!!! School starts Tues. and I want to start the folders ASAP. Info at their fingertips will definitely lessen the amount ??? later.

Get the folders with the prongs in the middle for loose leaf paper. Begin a correspondance with the parents on the paper to tell them briefly of their child’s accomplishments, remind them of upcoming events, ask about home exercises and tell parents if their child needs new supplies, etc… Many parents will write back to you underneath what you wrote answering your questions and perhaps asking some of their own.

You could include a reading list with books the parents could read to their child that go with what you are currently teaching to reinforce the concepts.

Include all relevant school phone numbers, and your own if you wish. You can include a conference request sheet and a list of assignments for the week so parents can check them off, or you can check them off to let parents know what you’ve covered.

Dd had a duotang (the folder with 3 prongs in the middle) that came home daily. Here are some things her grade 1 teacher included:

-a couple of worksheets for us to do that were due every Thursday (they went over them in class) (this was actually a seperate duotang. Enough worksheets for a month were in there but we only had to do 1-2 pages per week)

-a schedule showing field trips and who the parent volunteers would be

-a schedule of class parties and who was supposed to bring what and when

-show and share schedule

Another thing dd’s grade 1 teacher did was to send home a sheet that told what they’d been doing for the week. Daily, as a group the children would summarize the most important things the class had done (good for writing skills!). The teacher wrote the sentences for them. The day’s special helper drew a picture to go with the sentences. She did this on an 11×14 sheet, with a table divided into 10 sections (2 sections per day: one for sentences and one for the picture). She then made copies for each child to take home on Friday. Hope that makes sense! It’s difficult to describe.
