What contributes to a smart, hardworking child?

For instance, like the best kinds of work enviroments, the kinds of material they should study, for what kinds of ages, extra activities and what advantages and/or disadvantages they have, etc, etc…

The most important thing is a loving, learning atmosphere at home. Having parents that take time to work and play with their children.

I have one of those. A lot of support from parents.Visits to the library so they can read and learn.Have a good study area with a computer- these days a good computer is an advantagewith the internet so they can do research at home.Socialisiation with friends.Let them be able to relax at home and dont let them get too bogged down with too many activities.

an involved parent. n not just involved in their school life but everyday life. get the child interested in reading and writing. give them rewards for good work. get them motivated. show them what can happen if they dont try their best. be there for the kid!

A library card (much used), little or no TV, chores, and esp. a caring, encouraging parent!
