What age should children learn how to read?

My daughter is learning how to read. She is 5 and she is going to 1st grade. She read a little, she have to sound out the words before she can say the word. Will she have a hard time in 1st grade if she cant read well.

I’ve learnt to read when I was 4; however, my little nephew is almost 7 (in first grade here in Argentina) and he is just learning to read. Most teachers here say that kids should learn to read in their first grade with their teachers, but, nonetheless, some of them can do some little reading when they start.

I don’t think she’ll have problems, but if you want, you can make her read aloud to you her favourite stories! I teach English here and my youngest students learn a lot and have real fun doing that!

I think children should be introduced to books very early, which will make it easier for them to actually read when the time comes. Children should be able to read simple books (Fun with Dick and Jane, for example) By themselves by 5 years old. It’s better to have them do it around 4, which gives them a head start in school, but it’s of course more difficult for some children than others.

My youngest daughter is 7. She reads just above your daughter.I would say that your daughter is right where she should be for her age. She will learn more about reading when she goes to school. I always found that it was great to read aloud to mine several times a day. They tend to reconize more words more quickly when they hear them and see them by having a parent read to them.
