Too Many Exams?

Why are schools so hung up on testing kids? There is nothing wrong with taking an exam but in today’s NYC public schools, they’re testing first graders not only with classroom exams but with state exams.

I would not be surprised if they started testing kindergarden kids, too. I think learning is MORE THAN passing a test.

Schools are concerned with preparing students to pass exams rather than helping them learn academics.

In case you havent noticed it, tests are a part of the real world. If you want to become a doctor, lawyer, professional engineer, stock broker, just about any nice job, or even go to college, you have to take … and pass.. tests. It would be an injustice for any school not to show the importance of standardized testing. The earlier a students learns how to take tests and learns to place value on them, the better. I would be upset to know that my child was in a school where the importance of testing was not evident.

Here’s something I really don’t like. Because of NCLB laws, the state of Ohio make 5th-8th graders pass standardized testing just to move on to the next grade level. Fortunately, I didn’t have to do all that and only had to take the Ohio Graduation Test my sophomore year, so that I could get my diploma (the Ohio Graduation Test just replaced another kind of standardized test that did the same thing).

In first grade, I think it’s madness though. It’s madness to do standardized testing before about 4th grade. When I was in grade school, it was just 4th and 8th grade that I had to do standardized tests (I’m a high school senior).
