Teaching First Grade for the First Time. Tips?

I’m happy to say that I was hired today as a first grade teacher. My first career job! I have plenty of great ideas for the older grades, but how does one start the first day of school in a first grade classroom? I know there will be getting to know you activities as well as formative assessment taking place, but can you give me some good initiation activities?

Teach routine, teach routine, teach routine. Work on the small things…assume nothing! EVERYHTING needs to be a lesson. Don’t assume they know how to do things like get water, use scissors, walk in the room, etc. Work on building a community of friends & learners in the class. Make sure they feel safe and can trust you & their environment. Don’t overwhelm them by trying too much the first week – take it easy on ’em. Focus on setting routine, expectations & building relationships. Without that foundation, you won’t get much teaching done anyway! Good luck & congrats!!

I am a first grade teacher too. At our school we meet the kids and take them to our school celebration for the first grader kids. Then we take them to the classroom where we play some games to get to know each other.

After that I take the kids for a tour of the school. I show them the most important places at school (secretaries’ office, the bathroom, the way back to their classroom etc).

Then I give them “hello first grade” coloring pages and read a story about a little child on his first day at school (sorry, the book is not in English). After that the kids speak a little about their feeling on their first day.

And before we notice the first day is over!

I hope this will be helpful.

Anyway good luck and have fun!!
