As a teacher, I’d say … it really depends upon the school, the culture of the school, classroom(s), and the community how well a child with special needs is accepted. It is really important that parents talk with teachers prior to their kids starting school, and keep lines of communication open throughout the school year to see how the child is coping and being accepted.

It also helps to be sure the teacher(s) and other students/families understand the child’s particular needs/issues if that’s relevant (like if the special need is a physical one, it helps to explain what the issue is and what classmates can do to understand, support and accept the child). It can help to share articles or other materials with the teachers, or even come in to talk to classes if that seems appropriate.

Depending upon the ages of the children, a lot of times children are much more accepting of others and differences than we are as we get older.

Over the years I have had many severely disabled students in my drama classes. The other students almost always are kind, helpful, and encouraging to them. In group work, everyone volunteers to have those students perform with them. Occasionally I have had to explain a student’s particular need and goal within our class, but once explained, the other students accept and welcome him or her with no reservations.

I have observed similar behavior in core classes, choirs, sewing, cooking, manufacturing, and art classes.

The more our special needs students are around the other students, the more “normal” and acceptable they are.
