Alabama school regulations indicate that a public school can require disclosure of a student’s full “legal name” because the school board has the duty of maintaining records of every student that include legal names. There is nothing in the regulations concerning names on school work.

If there is any potential for confusion with another student as to who prepared classroom work, I would believe that the school would be wrong *not* to require both last names. If there is no potential for confusion with another student, however, I would think that the school administration or the local school board could waive the use of full legal names in a given case upon request by a parent or guardian.

Talk to the School Distric office. I have 2 last names but I only use one of them and the school is fine with it since it’s a mouth-full to say- plus it’s an italian name so everyone says it wrong.
