Should Michigan change the cut off date for kindergarten?

In Michigan they moved the the start of school from the last week of August to the week after Labor Day, but they left the cut-off for kindergarten at December 1st. I have always wondered where they got that date from and how they decided on it, but now that we have moved up the starting date for the first day of school I think that they should change it as well.

I wish they would get rid of those cut-off dates all together, and just test the kids starting at age 5, to see whether or not they are ready to start school. I think a lot of the problems with schooling would be solved by doing this. Just changing the cut off dates will not change the fact that some kids will be ready to start school at 4 and some not until they are 6 or 7.

in some countries, children start to school on the date of their 5th birthday, no matter when

in America, each state sets the cut-off date.

our state has changed from Oct 1 to Sept 15 but as a kindergarten teacher, I believe the date should be either Aug 1 or Aug 15 so that no child will start kindergarten under the age of 5…the ones who are still 4…even for two weeks…just are not emotionally ready to take on the academic demands of kindergarten.
