School Counselors, I need your point of view!?

I went to college for a teaching degree, but when I did my student teaching, I did not like it and decided not to pursue my credential. I have my BA and want to go to grad school. I like working with children, small groups if not one on one. Psych work has also interested me and I want to be in the education field. School counseling seems like the perfect blend for me. Putting aside the paperwork associated with your job, do you think it is a rewarding career? Do you feel you are really helping the students?

Thank you for your input.

It is a very rewarding career, but you might want to think about why you didn’t pursue a teaching career. If you are interested in working with people (not just children) in small groups or one to one, the personnel field could use someone with your credentials.

Whether counselling actually helps students or not is a moot point. It depends on the school – and the counselor. In many schools, counselling consists of advice on courses and precious little else.

In most schools, serious counselling is done by outside psychiatrists or psychoanalysts.
