Roller Backpacks and High School Don’t Mix?

I need serious help.I’m going to high school this year and my parents still want me to carry a roller backpack. My parents already bought me a roller backpack and they’re forcing me to use a roller backpack.Every time I bring up the subject they’ld dodge the subject.I tried to sneak and buy my own backpack, but my plan didn’t work.My parents keep on telling me that I shouldn’t use a backpack because of my back.I have scoliosis, but it’s not so bad that I need a brace. How am I suppose to handle my first year of high school if I have to drag a roller with me everywhere I go?Ppl are going to kick my backpack and it will get destroyed before the semester ends, just like me roller backpacks before.Every time I bring it up, my mom would just say,”You want one because of peer pressure.”No one in high s. has a roller. Can someone please give me evidence/reasons why high schoolers shouldn’t have rollers, please be serious and give me good reasons. Saying that rollers are for nerds won’t convince

i have scoliosis too! slight but had to wear a brace!

yea i know what you mean about parents being overprotective….my parent were like that too. i used to have a roller back pack for middle school and it didn’t go smothly at all! roller back packs are a hassel and can trip people! i have done that many times (and people got sooo angry) especially in crowded areas. it can be a pain. and generaly it’s hard to manuver! i mean you wont have a heap to carrry every day. and people would kinda thik it’s weird …i mean no one told it right to my face or anything. and high school can get busy and chaotic. and it makes you seem like a little child and not independant. and you could possibly get made fun off.

i stronly discourage buying one , cause of the triping and hard to manuver. and some are convertable , where you can put them onto your back but they weigh so heavy.. here are some TIPS THAT WILL HELP.

1.) in high school you have to carry some heavy textbooks (sometimes you only have 1 that you have to bring home and to school back and forth), so talk to the teachers, get a DOCTOR’S LETTER and request a book in class and an extra for home or something like that. that’s what i did.

2.) make use of the lockers they really help… only use ur books when you need them only. ..when you’re not using them & don’t put them in a locker ,it would be stupid to carry all your stuff with you and it would hurt your back. i am sure ur teachers will let you go to ur locker if you forgot something , once in a while.

3.) try and get one of those jansport backpacs that have jelly cushion on the straps, that’s supposed to educe stress ect. i got one of those and they are pretty durable. + you can move quicker and reacher to class on time. and limit your load.

Great for your back, but what about stairs? One of the reasons for lockers in high school is so you don’t have to carry all your books around anyway. I’ll bet you’ll get really tired of lugging a roller backpack up the steps and into & out of a car or bus. You’ll also have to put up with the jerks who will think you’re a wimp (which doesn’t matter! but still…). But if you have a long walk to school every day, then you should definitely get one! Otherwise, try to get a lot of homework done in school so you don’t have to carry so much home.

There was a study that came out last year about the degrading health of the backs of young people. The study through research proved that students should not carry more than 25lbs on their backs for any length of time. With your scoliosis, that number would most definitely be less.

What happens when you add the weight of a backpack is it puts immense pressure on your spine and throws your back out of alignment. While you may not feel any repercussions immediately, the effect over time can be very health threatening.

Compromise with your parents. Ask if you can buy a set of books to keep at school in your locker and keep one set at home. That way, you can carry the lighter sling type backpack (proven to be a better weight distributor) with just your spiral and notebook. Considering your scoliosis, the school may be willing to issue you the double set for free – contact the school nurse for support.

Good luck

I kind of have the same problem with you. I have a heart condition and it is a pain carrying a backpack with books up and down the stairs. It makes me short of breath and tired. So I try to get rid of the things I don’t need in my backpack. And its still heavy. My parents too suggested me about a rollerbackpack but I said to them that would weigh me down even more. Because I can’t roll my backpack on the stairs and it would get in the weigh. So (and if you have it too) I asked my school if I could have an elevator key. and now I use the elevator everyday. Also, ask your teachers if you can have a set of books, one at home, and one at school. This way you don’t have to carry anything, except your binder and your notebooks. I did this too and I now can carry my backpack easily.

So possible things that can lighten your backpack load so you can easily carry it:

-have a set of books, one at home, and one at school

-get rid of anything that you don’t need in your backpack. (candy wrappers, use a small calculator instead of a big one, etc)

-if you have an elevator at your school, try getting an elevator key to use it so you don’t have to go through the pain on the stairs.

you can do more research on roller backpacks, and the proof and evidence you find can convince your parents.

hope this helps

ok roller backpacks yeah so not for high school

i mean theyre ok but lots of people can be judgemental about it i should know im in high school blah

but also a regular backpack does make ur back hurt sometimes cuz theres times theyll make u carry all these stuff around all day sometimes for weeks and that will mess up ur backpack and just give u pain at times if its too heavy for u to carry

tell ur parents its not cuz of peer pressure that ur just tired of roller backpacks and of having the same thing that u want to change a bit cuz ur going into high school and as ur getting older

try that 😛

many people have scoliosis. i have it and i still use a regular backpack. i just carry my books and only keep nececities in my backpack. And you should get a backpack because some highschools are really crowded and that will happen. i know someone with a roller but he said that he can’t really get to class that easily and sometimes has to carry it and his roller is really worn out. If they still say no then you could just get one of those bags that hang off your shoulder and stick your binder and things in there. If they say its going to uneven your shoulders say u’ll wear it on both sides(switching every day).

well ya roller backpacks are OK for like 3rd or fourth grade but in high school you will need a regular backpack for if it doesn’t fit in you locker and it will mess you books up if people step on it. explain to your parents in practical reasons an see if that works good luck!

If they don’t want to let you use a backpack because of scoliosis, there are other options out there. like a messenger or body bag, totes, handbags, whatever. Talk to your parents and tell them that people have different tastes and wearing something you don’t like could bring down your self-esteem and could affect your studies. Tell them also that sometimes you have to look good to feel good.
