Continental drift refers to the movement of the Earth’s continents relative to each other.

In 1915, the German geologist and meteorologist Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of continental drift, which states that parts of the Earth’s crust slowly drift atop a liquid core. The fossil record supports and gives credence to the theories of continental drift and plate tectonics.

Continental drift is a phrase used to describe the movement of the continents. the earth’s outer shell or crust, the layer we live on top of, is made up of several (tectonic) plates that float on top of the earth’s mantle, (a layer of magma/lava beneath the crust.) because the crust is floating, the plates drift either away from, toward or into each other.

I think its pretty self explanatory. Its when the continents drift apart or closer to one another. The plates that they are on are constantly moving and that results in the continents moving as well.

There are TONS of websites you could look at for more information.

Publisher WW Norton offers a cool animation of drift, as continents broke apart over time.

“This animation presents a view of the continents at the level of map precision available to Alfred Wegener, who proposed that the continents once existed as a vast supercontinent, Pangea, that later fragmented. “
