Name the following figure of speech…?

“Life isn’t a joy to be sipped now and then”

Name the figure of speech of the above line with correct reasoning…

I just want to know if the above figure of speech is Metaphor, because in my exam I wrote antithesis (now and then, contrasting words) but my teacher just gave me half right. I tried to argue it out with her as to how it can be Metaphor. Can anyone explain?

A metaphor is defined as: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them.

The quote above likens joy to a liquid by saying “to be sipped now and then”, so it does qualify as a metaphor. If the author had written, “Life isn’t a joy, which like a liquid is sipped now and then”, you would have known right away that it was a simile because of the word “like”. When we make that same type of comparison but don’t use the word “like”, it is a metaphor.

Don’t feel too bad about it — figurative language can be rather tricky. Best wishes!
