math learning disorder?

I’m good in almost every subject (especially language & history), but I have serious problems with math. I can’t add/subtract 2 digit numbers in my head, I have trouble counting money, and I have to use my fingers to count sometimes. I struggle with some basic stuff like fractions and math logic. I can round numbers though. I tried going to a tutor for a few weeks and they explained basic algebra (which i started learning about 2-3 yrs ago) but I can’t grasp anything for more than 3 minutes and I can barely understand “shortcuts”. It’s extremely difficult and embarrassing for me. Nobody believes I have this problem. They just keep telling me I’m not trying hard enough. I’ve been trying my hardest but I’ve been failing math since elementary school. I don’t know what to do. Nobody believes me. What can I do? Please help me.

A math disability is called dyscalculia. See the link below to read all about it. You don’t say how old you are, but if you’re still in public school, you might be eligible for a special math class. My daughter had the same problem and her math teacher was no help. So I wrote a letter to the school asking them to evaluate her for learning disabilities because of the great disparity between her math ability and her grades in her other classes. They put her in a math class with only 7 other students and a very good math and special education teacher and she did very well in math after that. Good luck to you!

Not everyone is naturally good at math. It’s great that you’re good at language and history, which may also explain this; people tend to be very good with either words or math, but not both. If your high school only requires 2 or 3 years of math, only do the requirement, and then spend your extra class period taking a class in something that you succeed in. (Even if you can’t do this in high school, you will be able to in college.) If people think you’re not trying hard enough, forget about them and prove them wrong by doing well in all your other classes. Contrary to what your math teachers tell you, this problem will not hinder your whole life.

Hello!I’m Stephanie

I do believe you.

And you are not alone,I’m 16 years old and soon to be a junior and i’m extremely nervous to enter my Algebra class,I already failed Geometry and it happens to be one of the easiest math for everyone.And I hardly know my multiplication I struggle so much with basic math,math is very difficult for me as well.And I get very depress over it.It’s also very em brassing to be around others in math class and feel so lost.I tend to be good at every other subject too,I got good grades on English and Science,but math is just as if I was learning something I can’t achieve.

It comes to the point where I think I have Dsycalculia.And sometimes I feel so well more safe to say ‘oh im this way because i have a certain disorder but either way it’s just makes me feel useless to not be able to do third grade math.

My parents just keep telling me to ‘try harder’.And i continue to struggle.

Please,Please feel free to email me by going to my profile and sending me a mail, because I as well feel very alone.And it will be nice to share this with someone else and help each other improve.

I as well posted a similar question to yours days ago ^_^

I don’t know about disability and learning disorder. I have been tutoring for the last five years and I had a few students who claimed that they have some sort of disabilities such as memory, english, learning, writing…etc. Whatever they may say, I don’t see those as disability. I treat them as normal people, and I only see them improve from day to day.

You will be as disable as you think are. People learn differently … with different pace. If you can’t pick up as quick as the rest, I don’t think that makes you disable. It is also not that you are not trying hard either.

Just don’t give up and don’t categorize yourself as learning disable person.

I am not advertising my service here, but if you think you could use some FREE help, feel free to send me a message.

How’s your googling ability …check out dyscalculia or math learning disability

It seems like there are lots of people with this problem. I haven’t got a solution but I’m sure there are other ways to learn that will suit you better.

Best Wishes (c;
