Lying/Exaggerating in NHS application?

I am applying for the National Honors Society. I am a Sophomore who maintains a 4.0 GPA but lacks some leadership/community service experience. I don’t have enough hours or leadership positions so I was wondering if the committee really checks the info.

In my application, I will(/may) put something like:

attended Mock Trial (I only attended one meeting)

attended Leo Club (SAME ^^^)

attended Hiking Club (Same again^^^)

tutoring(i was the one who was tutored)

Public Park Trash pickup (threw my own trash in the rubbish can)

Sports Captain [in summer school PE]

Participated an IMPEACH BUSH rally [mentally]

??? (no joke)

I honestly wouldn’t reccomend lying on your application. I understand that you feel that exaggerating would give you a better chance to get into NHS but that isn’t necessecarily true.

The last four are absoulte lies so I would DEFINITELY not put them on the application. I don’t know how the application process works at your school but where I went, it was determined by a group of teachers who definitely would have known that those things sounded fishy and would have looked into them. Do you want to take that risk? There is no way that you will get into NHS if they find out you lied.

I would say that the better way to approach your application would be to really emphasize your (real) strong points. Obviously if you have a 4.0 you are a very smart and hardworking student, make sure to list any academic awards you have recieved, high level classes you have taken etc. Try to think of EVERYTHING that you really did that you could put on the application, a lot of times you forget about some things when you first make a list. Maybe ask your parents if they can think of anything to add.

Since you don’t have a lot of community service, why not start some now (for real)? If you made a real committment, you could write that on your application and not have to worry about lying or feeling bad about it. I know time is tight for students but community service is a really great experience and even if it is too late for NHS this year it will definitely help you get into college!

I wish you the best of luck with this, I know the pressure can be really hard to deal with. I hope that in the end you will feel much better that you didn’t lie, no matter what the outcome for NHS!
