It it bad to take Study Hall in your Junior year of high school?

I need to know if it looks bad for college or if it’s bad in general to take study hall this year for my junior year of high school. I need to show all the things I’ve done for school, like afterschool activites, which I need to step up this year, and I don’t want them to see that I’m slacking off. (Since I barely do any afterschool clubs in the first place.)

The thing is, this year I have a pretty hefty schedule, and I would think a little free period to relax would be a nice convenience, instead of an elective class to worry about that has little to no affect on my grade.

My schedule consists of:

Physics Honors

Calculus Honors

AP US History

AP Chemistry

Spanish 4 Regents (I didn’t feel like taking the honors, since it’s too rigorous this year)

AP English

Given that I’m taking those classes, is a study hall deserved?

I would take study hall if I needed to.

but if it looks bad and you’ll absolutely die if you don’t have a PERFECT record then take an easy-ish class… like art!

Colleges may look at a study hall as a bad thing if you didn’t also have Honours and AP classes, but with that class load I think it would be wise to schedule either an easier class (maybe a computer class) that you could finish everything in early and then use as a study all or just take the study hall class. Having it on there isn’t going to make a college thing “Oh this person took study hall they must be stupid” because as long as you get a good ACT/SAT score along with good grades it shouldn’t really matter. I mean I got a C in health (Wasn’t my fault) and it didn’t impact my getting into school at all (As I write this to you from my dorm!) Hope this helps.

Take what feels comfortable and right for you. It will all work out.

I personally am not sure how colleges look at the course load, but you are taking a challenging schedule. If you need the time a study hall offers you to allow you time for sports, community service or clubs at school I say take the study hall. Colleges are looking for more than just 100% school work students. They want to see you have a life (community service,sports/clubs, etc…) and handle your school load.

Ask yourself this: if you take the study are you going to use it to get your homework done, or are you just going to take a nap and talk with your friends?

If you are just going to nap and talk with friends, take an elective you would enjoy.

If you are going to use the study hall to get work done then take it. You have a full course load. Even if you are only able to get the homework done for one class, it is one less book to take home. I never took a study until my Junior year and I still managed to get into a great college with almost a full scholarship.

Don’t forget with this heavy schedule to make time for yourself (i.e. like your idea of joining a club). Good luck!

I had a T.A. period (teacher’s assistant) on my transcript from high school and when I filled out my college applications I didn’t put it on there because it only includes academic classes. So most likely you won’t have to put it on there at all, but if you took another academic class you would have another class to put on your application. All my applications were for state schools in California and I did them a couple years ago so yours may be different. I don’t think it would be too big of deal seeing all the AP classes you’re taking! Good luck on U of M!

Never take study hall. Take an elective like music instead. Study hall does indeed look bad.
