Is my 8 yo boy really gifted? He is reading Faulkner this summer.?

We were told he was above avg the last few years…nothing crazy, then this summer his reading went off the chart. He’ll be in 3rd grade but went from 4th/5th grade books to some middle school level books and I threw Faulkners absalom absalom at him as kind of a joke…and darn if he isn’t getting through it. Most college grads can’t get thru that book…now I am totally flabergasted…what do you guys think?

When I was in those grades I was homeschooled at the time and I could read adult level books which was an achievement but I reread them later and I understood much more than I was capable of back then. Your child might get through it, but the reason college grads can’t get through that book is because they’re taking an intellectual interest in it while I think your child is probably just trying to impress you, and I doubt he’s actually interested or completely understanding the book.

You have a smart kid, but I’m not sure he’s gifted.

I am wondering how much of the book the understands. A child can read a book and even sound out the words in it. This does not mean they understand what they have read.

If your child understand what they have read then it is a good chance he is gifted. I am attaching a sight where you can look into how to get your child accessed to see if he is gifted or not. http://www.gt-cybersource.org/Record.aspx?NavID=2_0&rid=11376 This sight gives you some great guidelines to follow when determining your child’s gift.

I would contact your child’s school and talk to the councilor of the school about the gifted children assessment test. As a parent you can evoke your right to have this done on behalf of your child.

I think your son is really gifted at tricking dipshits into thinking that he’s a lot smarter than them. Can you guess who he recently tricked?
