Can you give more information about your situation? I’m a teacher, and the only time we would contact the grandparents about a child is if they’re the legal guardians. Well, that and maybe just to call and ask them to pick a sick child up if the parents can’t be reached, but even then, the grandparents would have to be listed by the parents as emergency contacts.

Still, I wouldn’t say it’s illegal, but it’s not really very productive, or professional, and probably not very ethical. Any decisions to be made must be made by the parents or legal guardians, not the grandparents (unless they ARE the legal guardians), so what’s the point of going behind the parents’ back? It’s only going to cause ill feelings, foster a sense of mistrust, and it certainly won’t help the relationship between the school and the parents.

Could you be talking about a situation where a grandparent picks the child up from school and the teacher innocently tells the grandparent something about the child’s day? I wouldn’t call that “going behind the parent’s back” so much as passing along a message at dismissal. (Like, “Sally forgot her lunch today” or “Johnny had a little accident at recess”.)

More details would be helpful…

Yes it is , everything that pertains to the student is confidential and no one has the right to know except those parents. This is a serious infraction that could cause alot of problems, how does the school know if there are any problems with the grandparents , abuse, alcohol or mental problems, I’m not saying the grandparents have this issue but they are just some examples of why a school is not supposed to talk about a student to anyone except the parents, go the the Department of Education or what ever you have and make a formal complaint.

I don’t know if it is “illegal” however, it is unethical. Children are the parents, not the grandparents. Now, if the grandparents have custody of the child and are raising the shild that is a different story.

I think it depends on what it is. There are some privacy issues.
